Studying abroad is always one of my dream. After carefully considering my aptitude, interests, the nature of my training and my ultimate professional ambition, I have decided to pursue M.S. in Electrical Engineering specializing in the fields of Signal Processing. As a statement of purpose of my graduate study, I describe here my academic background, my research interests and my future plan.
Right from my school days, I have always shown a high degree of competence and interest in mathematics and physical sciences. I was admitted to the undergraduate program in Measurement and Control Technology and Instrument through a statewide college entrance examination at Shandong University, China. In my undergraduate study I have been deeply interested by subjects such as Digital electronic technology, Modern detection technology and Automatic control principle. I have furthered my knowledge in these subjects; especially signal processing through extensive reading. When I want to understand new things, I realize that there are more things which I need to learn. So a graduate study in electrical engineering is the next step in my quest for knowledge.
For the past one year, I am studying in the INTO Mason program of Electrical Engineering. I took the course Signals and Systems last semester. I got A for this course. It gives the foundational ideas about Signal Process. I also use Matlab to do some projects of this course, which help me master the most useful tool for future study. Now I am taking Modern Systems Theory and Introduction to Random Processes. Both of them are crucial for my course at a later stage. I also take the graduate preparation courses in the program. I have improved my academic ability through these courses. I think as a good graduate student, he must be able to think critically, perform research independently and communicate with others effectively. In these course, I do the reading, writing and presentation in person and in groups. All of these enhance my ability to deal with the difficulties I will meet in the future study.
My area of interest is Signal Processing. Signal processing, in its theory and application, is reflective of people’s inherent nature to challenge the obvious and seek to discover the unreachable. I have been attracted to the subject due to its highly mathematical approach and because of its objective of extracting the maximum information from unwieldy signals. Especially when I take courses and do some projects about signal processing, I find I get more understanding of it. Digital signal processing techniques has been used in the fields of communications, networking, computer vision, dynamic modeling, neural engineering and many others. Such advanced techniques have enormously increased the quality of people’s life. I am highly motivated to work for developing such Digital signal processing techniques. As an undergraduate student what I have learned is limited in this subject, so I am thirsty for acquiring more knowledge in terms of both theory and application.
It is a strong belief in my family that the American education system has the best to offer in the whole world. If I can get an opportunity to be a part of that intellectually stimulating environment, I am sure my talents will be put to optimal use. When I am in the INTO Mason program, I am deeply attracted by the fantastic studying environment and outstanding professors. I really enjoy the peaceful campus environment and it is good for me to study. In addition, when I communicate with Professor Zhi Tian and Professor Luis A Duffaut Espinosa, both of them give me good suggestions about my study, which helps me open my mind and find the correct way of this field. I also know the Electrical Engineering program of your department is one of the top in Virginia. I am also impressed by the research going on in your department by excellent faculties.
As future plan, I would like to take up a career in my home country. Since China is a developing country with an enormous potential in the signal processes, what I learn will serve the needs of this developing industry.
